Jose R. Novoa, the father of one of our board members and coaches, Jose Novoa, passed away on December 4th at the age of 71. Jose Sr. brought his love of soccer from his native Cuba in the 1960's and in the late 1970's, Jose Sr. and some other soccer loving friends, established the Toro Soccer Club. Jose also helped establish the Catholic Youth Soccer League that is the primary soccer organization for the Catholic schools in Omaha. Toro Soccer Club was originally established as a high school boys club. All the players were enrolled at Creighton Prep high school. A few years later, girls from Marian high school were invited into the club. Over the years, the boys division split off and became the Bluejay soccer club while the girls division expanded into the youth divisions and opened to players from any school. During this time, Jose offered his advice and leadership to ensure that Toro remained one of the most respected clubs in Nebraska. That role was passed on to his son, Jose Novoa, who has served as president of the club and is currently on the board of directors. Jose is also the coach of Toro Chaos. The entire Toro family would like to express their sincere condolences to the Novoa family. Jose Sr. is survived by his wife Carmen of 48 years, his son and daughter-in-law Jose and Laura, his daughter Carmen, and eight grandchildren. At the request of the family, a memorial scholarship fund has been established by Toro Soccer Club to provide assistance for underprivileged players and their families. If you would like to contribute to this fund, make your check payable to "Toro - Jose Novoa Scholarship" and send to Larry Lees, 4227 North 139 Ave, Omaha, Ne 68164. Inquiries can be made by calling John Fatte', 740-7107.
